The ivy-covered stone walls of Trinity College create a distinct barrier against the surrounding city, housing a Gothic Revival campus that feels detached from the rest of the University of Toronto. Bishop John Strachan founded the college in eighteen fifty-one after he withdrew from the University of Toronto, which he viewed as too secular. For decades, Trinity operated as an independent Anglican university, holding onto its own traditions and ecclesiastical identity before finally joining the larger university system in nineteen oh four.
