Three hundred forty-six Spadina Avenue is a narrow, three-story brick building distinguished by the faded, hand-painted sign for the Ideal Coffee company stretching across its facade. Built in nineteen thirteen, it served for decades as the headquarters and roasting plant for a business that supplied beans to immigrants flooding into Kensington Market. The smell of burning husks and roasted coffee once hung heavy here, thick enough to coat the brickwork, while workers packed bags for storefronts that crowded the neighborhood streets.
