Alexander Wood Statue

The bronze figure of Alexander Wood stands at the corner of Church and Wellesley, identifiable by his eighteenth-century frock coat and the way he leans casually against a short pillar. Wood arrived in York in seventeen ninety-three and became a prominent merchant, but his life shifted in eighteen ten after a scandal involving a young man. He fled to a nearby village to escape investigation, only to return years later as a respected magistrate, his reputation intact despite the whispers that followed him.
