Cecil Community Centre

The Cecil Community Centre sits in a low, unassuming brick building with a jagged, flat roofline that breaks the rhythm of the surrounding residential street. It began as a scrappy neighborhood project in the late nineteen seventies when local residents occupied an old schoolhouse to stop it from being demolished. They demanded a space for childcare and community meetings. The city eventually handed them the keys, and the people who lived here spent years transforming the classrooms into the kitchen and workshops you see today.
