The plaque on the wall of the Hotel des Ecrivains marks the final room of the writer Jean Genet. He spent his last night here, dying of throat cancer in the early hours of April fifteen, nineteen eighty-six. By then, the man who had been a petty thief, a celebrated prisoner, and an icon of the French literary establishment was reduced to a failing body. He fell from his bed and died on the floor, alone in a room full of manuscripts.
