The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de l'Hôpital Sainte-Anne occupies a nineteenth-century administrative building inside a sprawling psychiatric hospital. Its collection centers on the work of patients, beginning with a massive donation from Doctor Gaston Ferdière in the nineteen fifties. He believed art helped his patients express what they could not say, and he amassed thousands of paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Some artists here spent decades confined, creating detailed, private worlds on paper while the hospital gates stayed locked around them.
