Théâtre Montparnasse

The Theatre Montparnasse wears a distinctive cream-colored facade topped by a weathered copper dome that marks the corner of the Rue de la Gaite. Built in eighteen seventeen, it began as a simple dance hall before Gaston Baty took over in nineteen thirty. He transformed the space into a laboratory for avant-garde theater, insisting that lighting and set design held as much weight as the spoken word. The wooden stage boards he installed still creak under the feet of modern actors today.
