Académie Colarossi

historic

The narrow doorway on the Rue de la Grande Chaumière hides the former site of the Académie Colarossi. Unlike the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, this school welcomed female students and allowed them to draw from male nude models as early as the eighteen eighties. Italian sculptor Filippo Colarossi founded the academy, and Camille Claudel studied here. When the school closed in nineteen thirty-three, the frustrated director burned the school's entire archive of student records and drawings in the street.
