Pont de la Concorde

The Pont de la Concorde is paved with the stones of the Bastille. When the prison was demolished in seventeen eighty-nine, architects repurposed the masonry to build this bridge across the Seine. Jean-Rodolphe Perronet designed the structure to connect the new Place de la Concorde with the left bank. During the French Revolution, workers moved the heavy limestone blocks by hand, ensuring the remains of the old royal fortress became the foundation for a pathway toward the new republic.
