The Musée de la Franc-Maçonnerie occupies the top floors of the headquarters of the Grand Orient de France on Rue Cadet. Behind its unassuming iron gate, the museum holds a collection of artifacts belonging to a society long shrouded in public mystery. When the Nazis occupied Paris in nineteen forty, they raided this building and seized thousands of Masonic documents. These archives eventually vanished into Soviet vaults, only to be rediscovered in Moscow after the fall of the Berlin Wall in nineteen ninety-one.
