Montmartre Funicular

The Montmartre Funicular originally operated using an inventive hydraulic system rather than electricity. When it first opened in 1900, each of the two passenger cars was equipped with large water tanks hidden beneath the floor. At the top of the hill, the descending car would fill its tanks with water, making it heavy enough to pull the lighter, ascending car up the steep incline using gravity and a shared cable.
