Square Louise Michel

The ground beneath your feet at Square Louise Michel was once a vast gypsum quarry. For centuries, laborers extracted the stone used to create the iconic plaster of Paris, hollowing out the southern face of the Montmartre hill. This industrial past is still echoed in the steep, dramatic incline of the park, which now rises in a series of manicured terraces and winding paths toward the basilica above.
