The Lycée Victor-Duruy sits behind a high stone wall, recognizable by the sweeping, curved facade of the former convent chapel that now serves as the school library. Empress Eugénie founded this institution in eighteen sixty-nine as a secular boarding school for young women, breaking from the religious education dominant at the time. She tasked the architect Haussmann with repurposing the former convent of the Dames de la Visitation. Today, students move between classrooms through gardens that once provided seclusion for the nuns.
