The bridge you are approaching is officially named the Pont de Grenelle-Cadets-de-Saumur. Its current name serves as a tribute to the young students of the Saumur Cavalry School who, in June of nineteen forty, made a desperate and heroic stand against German forces along the Loire River to protect the city of Saumur. While the bridge is a functional steel structure completed in the late nineteen sixties, this specific title ensures that its daily traffic remains linked to a moment of significant military sacrifice during the Second World War.
