A rusted iron gate marks the entrance to Square Saint-Médard, a quiet patch of green tucked against the oldest church in the Latin Quarter. This small garden occupies what was once a parish cemetery. During the eighteenth century, the site drew thousands of pilgrims who believed that the grave of the deacon François Pâris held miraculous healing powers. The crowds grew so unruly and intense that King Louis the fifteenth famously ordered the gate locked, posting a decree on the wall that forbade God from performing further miracles.
