Le Dôme Café opened in eighteen ninety-eight as a humble neighborhood tobacco bar at the corner of Boulevard Montparnasse and Rue Delambre. It transformed into a global focal point for the intellectual elite during the interwar period. Artists, writers, and expatriates from across the globe turned this corner into an informal, high-stakes marketplace where reputations were built over drinks. Proprietor Victor Libion fostered this creative spirit by accepting original sketches from struggling artists as payment for their tabs. These works often adorned the walls, creating a gallery of immense value that would later become legendary among art historians.
