In the nineteen seventies, the city government formalized these stalls to organize the informal commerce that had long clustered near the Montparnasse cemetery gates. Today, merchants still negotiate their narrow spaces between the traffic lanes, selling produce from the surrounding countryside alongside wheels of aged Comté cheese.
