You are approaching a modest, unassuming house that sits on a hillside in the sixteen arrondissement, a quiet structure that belies its status as the only remaining Parisian residence of the legendary novelist Honoré de Balzac. This building served as his clandestine sanctuary between eighteen forty and eighteen forty-seven. At the time, Balzac was drowning in debt following a series of failed business ventures and was actively avoiding his creditors. To maintain his anonymity, he had his housekeeper sign the lease under the assumed name of Monsieur de Breugnol. The house was strategically chosen for its unique, sloping terrain. From the street level on Rue Raynouard, only the top floor is visible, while the rest of the house cascades down the hill toward the lower street, Rue Berton. This architectural quirk provided Balzac with a secret exit, allowing him to slip away unnoticed whenever debt collectors came knocking at the front door. It was within this hidden refuge that he locked himself away, often working through the night to produce some of the most significant literature of the nineteenth century.
