The Pelouse de la Muette marks the site where humanity first broke free from the bonds of gravity. On November 21, 1783, this open space hosted the world's first untethered manned hot air balloon flight. A balloon constructed by the Montgolfier brothers lifted two men, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes, into the sky before a crowd that included King Louis XVI and Benjamin Franklin.
