You are looking at the Castel Beranger, which stands as the definitive birth of the Art Nouveau movement in Paris. When architect Hector Guimard began this project in the mid eighteen nineties, he was originally tasked with designing a standard, traditional apartment building. Everything changed after he traveled to Brussels and saw the work of architect Victor Horta. Inspired by the fluid, organic lines he encountered, Guimard convinced his client to abandon the conservative plan in favor of an experimental design that defied almost every architectural convention of the era.
