Square Lamartine

Square Lamartine occupies a unique position in the history of the sixteenth arrondissement because it was built as an act of public charity. In 1860, the famous Romantic poet and politician Alphonse de Lamartine found himself in severe financial ruin due to his own legendary extravagance. To ensure he had a place to live in his final years, the city of Paris gifted him a private chalet on the nearby Avenue Henri-Martin. The square that now bears his name was established in 1862 on the land surrounding that residence, anchoring his legacy in the heart of this district.
