Jardins d'Eole

The Jardins d'Eole occupies a long, narrow strip of land that tells the story of an industrial past transformed by community persistence. For over a century and a half, this site functioned as a sunken rail yard known as the Cour du Maroc, serving as a gritty hub for maintenance and storage for trains pulling into the Gare de l'Est. While many Parisian parks began as royal gardens or gifts from monarchs, this four-hectare space exists because of a decade-long mobilization by local neighborhood activists who demanded a green space in one of the city's most densely populated and underprivileged districts. Their successful campaign eventually reshaped this former brownfield into a park that remains deeply connected to its origins, with a design that intentionally echoes the site's history as a railway corridor.
