You are arriving at the Square Saint-Bernard-Said-Bouziri, a peaceful green space tucked behind the Saint-Bernard church in the Goutte d'Or neighborhood. The square takes its official name from a Tunisian human rights activist who lived in this district for nearly four decades. Before it became a quiet place for residents to relax, this site held a bronze sculpture titled The Winnowing Woman, created by artist Theophile Barrau in the late nineteenth century. During the German occupation of Paris in the second world war, the bronze statue was taken and melted down, leaving behind only the memories and historical records of its presence in the park.
