Fouquet's

landmark

Louis Fouquet opened this brasserie in eighteen ninety-nine, but he took a deliberate linguistic detour when naming it. While a standard French name would rhyme with bouquet, this institution is pronounced with a hard T and S at the end, mimicking the sound of the English word nets. This distinct pronunciation has persisted for over a century, marking the brasserie as an establishment that has always looked toward an international stage rather than strictly local traditions.
