Batignolles Cemetery

Batignolles Cemetery opened its gates in eighteen thirty-three, emerging during a period when Paris was rapidly expanding and needed new, hygienic burial grounds outside the crowded city center. It was designed as a garden cemetery, emphasizing peaceful, tree-lined avenues to offer a dignified final resting place. Today, nearly nine hundred mature trees, primarily chestnuts and maples, shade the fifteen thousand graves found within its eleven-hectare perimeter. While many other Parisian burial grounds are famed for their monumental architecture, this site remains a quiet, green refuge that sits in stark contrast to the modern urban infrastructure that surrounds it.
