Square du Cardinal Petit de Julleville

The Square du Cardinal Petit de Julleville is a quiet, leafy park located in the seventeenth arrondissement of Paris. It serves as a living memorial to Pierre Petit de Julleville, a French cardinal who played a significant role in the local community during the early twentieth century. Before his elevation to the College of Cardinals in 1946, he spent many years as a dedicated educator and administrator at the nearby Institution Notre-Dame de Sainte-Croix. He served there as the superior of the school between 1910 and 1914, and again from 1918 to 1927. His career was marked by a commitment to both intellectual rigor and pastoral care, qualities that led to his eventual appointment as the Archbishop of Rouen. The park itself reflects this connection to his work as an educator. It is planted with a variety of trees, including horse chestnuts, Virginia tulip trees, and boxelder maples, which were chosen to honor his memory in the neighborhood where he once shaped the lives of many students. While the city of Paris is filled with grand, historic squares, this space remains a more intimate tribute to a man who spent a large portion of his life dedicated to teaching and service.
