Square Joan of Arc

The bronze statue of Joan of Arc stands at the center of this square, her sword raised high toward the sky. Sculpted by Maxime Real del Sarte, the figure is actually a replacement for an earlier version melted down by the German occupation forces during the Second World War. Real del Sarte, who lost an arm in the Great War, modeled Joan’s face after his own sister. The original cast now sits in a garden in the city of Rouen.
