Salle Pleyel

The Salle Pleyel features a distinct, fan-shaped auditorium designed to prioritize acoustics above all else. Lyonel Pleyel, whose family manufactured pianos, commissioned this hall in nineteen twenty-seven to showcase their instruments and host grand orchestral performances. During the opening night, Igor Stravinsky conducted his own work before an audience that included Maurice Ravel. The architects used reinforced concrete to create curves that baffled early critics, yet those same curves produced a clarity of sound that remains the hall's defining characteristic today.
