Île de la Jatte

The Île de la Jatte is a narrow, mile-long island resting in the middle of the Seine between Neuilly-sur-Seine and Levallois-Perret. It is defined by the heavy tree canopy that hides the luxury apartment buildings and private gardens from the water. In the eighteen eighties, Georges Seurat set his easel here to paint A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, capturing the leisure of Parisians escaping the city’s heat for the river’s shade, just as locals still do today.
