The Caserne Champerret is a massive, severe block of limestone and brick that houses the Brigade des Sapeurs-Pompiers de Paris. It occupies a site where the old city walls once stood, serving as a permanent fortress for the firefighters who protect the capital. In nineteen forty-four, when the resistance fought for the liberation of Paris, a commander inside these walls refused to follow orders to destroy the city’s records, choosing to hold the station instead. He kept the building intact through the final skirmishes.
