The Irish Embassy occupies the Hôtel de Breteuil, a limestone mansion marked by its grand, wrought-iron gates and the distinct green, white, and orange tricolor flag flying above the entrance. Built in the eighteen thirties, the house belonged to the Marquis de Breteuil, who hosted Marcel Proust among his many aristocratic guests. When the Irish state bought the building in nineteen fifty-four, they acquired not only a piece of real estate but a home filled with gilded moldings, massive chandeliers, and mirrors from the Second Empire.
