The Porte Maillot is marked by the wide, open expanse where the city’s defensive walls once forced travelers to halt. Named for the maille, or mallet, used in a seventeenth-century lawn game played nearby, this site served as the primary western gateway into Paris. King Louis the Fourteenth often passed through here to reach his hunting grounds in the Bois de Boulogne. The gate stands where the royal road met the fortification line, dictating the flow of traffic into the capital for centuries.
