The Anatole France metro station sits beneath the border of Paris and Neuilly-sur-Seine. Its design features vaulted ceilings covered in white ceramic tiles that reflect light down onto the tracks. When engineers began digging in the nineteen thirties, they encountered thick, wet sand that collapsed into the tunnel multiple times. Workers had to use a specialized shield method to hold back the earth while they built the station frame. It remains one of the deepest points along the line.
