The Château de Bagatelle sits inside the Bois de Boulogne, distinguished by its delicate, neoclassical proportions and the small, intimate scale that earned it the nickname of a folly. Count d’Artois wagered the King of France one hundred thousand livres that he could build this entire retreat in under sixty-four days. In seventeen seventy-seven, six hundred laborers worked around the clock to finish the house, the stables, and the elaborate gardens in exactly sixty-three days. The King eventually paid the bet.
