The Monument de la Cascade du Bois de Boulogne features a large, artificial rock grotto designed to mimic a natural waterfall. Napoleon the Third commissioned this structure during his transformation of Paris in the nineteenth century. Engineers piped water from the lake above to create a cascading effect over the carefully placed boulders. A local legend claims the emperor often visited this site to watch the water flow while he finalized plans for the surrounding parkland, away from the noise of the city.
