Croix Catelan

The Croix Catelan features a tall, stone cross standing in the middle of a quiet clearing in the Bois de Boulogne. It marks the legendary site where a knight named Catelan was murdered in the early fourteenth century. According to the tale, he was a troubadour carrying perfumes to King Philippe le Bel when he was set upon by guards who mistakenly killed him in a dispute. The king ordered this stone cross raised in his memory, naming the surrounding woods after the victim.
