Maisons Jaoul

The Maisons Jaoul consist of two raw concrete houses featuring deep, overhanging rooflines and vaulted ceilings made of brick. André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs, classified them as historic monuments in nineteen sixty-six, making them the first twentieth-century buildings to receive this protection. André Jaoul commissioned them for his son and himself in nineteen fifty-one. Le Corbusier designed these homes to explore the possibilities of industrial construction, utilizing standardized parts to build affordable, modern dwellings for the postwar era.
