Maisons Jaoul

The Maisons Jaoul are two distinct, side-by-side villas that represent a radical departure in the career of the famous architect Le Corbusier. While he was once celebrated for stark white walls and sleek, machine-like aesthetics, these homes mark his embrace of a rugged, tactile style. You can see this shift in the heavy, unpainted concrete and the rough-hewn brickwork that gives the buildings their imposing, textured appearance. Constructed between nineteen fifty-four and nineteen fifty-six, they serve as one of his earliest experiments in what would eventually be known as New Brutalism.
