The red-lacquered wood and upturned eaves of the Pagode Loo stand out against the limestone façades of the sixteenth arrondissement. Ching Tsai Loo, an influential Chinese art dealer, transformed this former private mansion into a pagoda in nineteen twenty-six. He imported rare materials to shroud the nineteenth-century structure, turning the building into a gallery for his collection of Asian antiquities. The exterior remains a bold, permanent statement of his desire to bring Eastern aesthetics directly into the heart of Paris.
