The building itself underwent a significant transformation in the 1880s when the family had it remodeled in a picturesque, neo-Norman chalet style. The updated design introduced the prominent wooden timber framing, balconies, and the signature turret that give the house its distinct appearance today. Recognized for its unique architecture and its connection to a pioneer of polar science, the residence has been designated as a historical monument.
