Maison du Commandant Charcot

The brick facade of the Maison du Commandant Charcot features a distinct series of ship-themed porthole windows near the entrance. Jean-Baptiste Charcot, a famous polar explorer, lived here while preparing for his scientific voyages to the Arctic and Antarctic in the early twentieth century. He filled the residence with nautical instruments and artifacts from his expeditions. During the nineteen thirties, he held meetings here to plan his final journey on the Pourquoi-Pas, a ship that famously foundered off the coast of Iceland.
