Shakespeare Garden Theater de Verdure

The Théâtre de Verdure in the Jardin Shakespeare is defined by its living backdrop of hornbeam hedges, shaped into thick, green walls that enclose the stage. This garden occupies the site of the former Pré Catelan dairy, where in the nineteenth century, aristocrats drank fresh milk served by staff dressed in Swiss peasant costumes. The theater was later built to stage open-air performances of Shakespeare’s plays, using the dense greenery to provide natural acoustics and a quiet, enclosed sanctuary for actors and audiences alike.
