The Bois de Boulogne stretches across two thousand acres with a patchwork of wild woods, manicured lawns, and winding lakes. Napoleon the Third ordered its transformation in the eighteen fifties, modeling the park after London’s Hyde Park to provide a green lung for a growing city. Before the imperial redesign, the land served as a royal hunting ground for French monarchs. King Philippe the Fourth once traveled here to pray at a small chapel, naming the forest after his hometown of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
