A stone monument sits near the edge of the trees, marked by a plaque that recalls the night of August sixteenth, nineteen forty-four. Thirty-five members of the French Resistance were taken here by members of the Gestapo and the Milice, lined up, and shot. These men had been held at the Fresnes prison until their final transport to this clearing. Their bodies were discovered the following morning by local residents who heard the gunfire echoing through the woods under the cover of darkness.
