The Eglise Notre-Dame de Compassion is a small, octagonal chapel tucked into a corner of the seventeenth arrondissement. It was built to mark the exact spot where the Duke of Orléans, the eldest son of King Louis Philippe, died in eighteen forty-two after a carriage accident. When his horses bolted, he jumped from the moving vehicle and struck his head against the pavement. The king ordered this building to serve as a memorial for the prince and his family, keeping his memory here.
