Square des Moines de Tibhirine

This quiet green space in the eleventh arrondissement bears the name Square des Moines de Tibhirine to honor a community of seven Trappist monks who were kidnapped and killed in Algeria during the civil war in nineteen ninety-six. Before being renamed in their memory in May of twenty sixteen, the garden was known as Square Saint-Ambroise, a title it held since its creation in eighteen seventy-one. Its original layout was dictated by the demolition of the first Saint-Ambroise church, which stood on this site until it was razed to make way for the development of what is now Boulevard Voltaire.
