Théâtre Ouvert - Centre National des Dramaturgies Contemporaines

cultural

Théâtre Ouvert began in nineteen seventy-one at the Festival d Avignon, born from a challenge issued by legendary director Jean Vilar to founders Micheline and Lucien Attoun. Vilar tasked them with creating a platform specifically for contemporary dramatic writing, a field he felt lacked sufficient support at the time. They answered by launching a structure that prioritized the raw text, often stripping away elaborate sets or costumes to focus entirely on the dialogue between the playwright and the audience. This experimental focus established the venue as a space where scripts were not just performed but treated as works in a state of fusion, ready to be discovered and shaped.
