Porte du Pré Saint-Gervais de Paris

The Porte du Pre Saint Gervais is a former gate located along the line of the old Thiers wall, which once encircled Paris as a defensive fortification. These gates were not grand triumphal arches but functional points of entry and control for the city during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At this specific location, the gate served as a gateway between the bustling nineteenth arrondissement of Paris and the neighboring commune of Le Pre Saint Gervais. The area around this gate was part of a complex defensive zone known as the zone, where building restrictions once prevented permanent construction to maintain clear lines of fire for the city's military. Historically, this gate marked a boundary that separated the dense urban fabric of the capital from what was then an area defined by agricultural lands and vital water springs.
