The Cabaret du Ciel, or the Cabaret of Heaven, once stood at fifty-three Boulevard de Clichy as a surreal experiment in public entertainment. During the eighteen nineties, it functioned as an immersive theme restaurant where the afterlife was brought down to earth through elaborate stagecraft. Patrons entered a space painted in white and blue, filled with glittering stars and sculptures of angels, to drink from chalices while harp music played in the background.
