Square Hector Berlioz

Square Hector Berlioz is a small, quiet pocket park that serves as a subtle tribute to the French Romantic composer who once lived nearby on the Rue de Calais. The space was formerly known as Square Vintimille, a name it held when a bronze monument of the composer was first inaugurated here in eighteen eighty-six. That original sculpture depicted Berlioz in a pensive, informal pose with his hand in his pocket, resting against a music stand. During the Second World War, the occupying Nazi army dismantled the bronze statue to melt it down for the production of armaments. While a replacement statue was eventually installed to honor the composer's legacy, the loss of the original bronze remains a marked moment in the history of this site. Today, the square is a modest, localized retreat that quietly commemorates one of the most innovative and unconventional figures in the history of music.
