Oper Köln | Offenbachplatz

cultural

The Oper Köln at Offenbachplatz stands out as a sprawling, flat-roofed concrete structure, framed by sharp, geometric lines that contrast with the city’s older, spire-filled skyline. Architects Wilhelm Riphahn and Andreas Vollmer finished this building in nineteen fifty-seven, replacing the original nineteenth-century house that bombs destroyed during the war. Its most famous night happened in nineteen seventy-five, when a massive fire broke out just hours before a performance of Don Carlos, leaving the house gutted and dark for years.
