Unter Krahnenbäumen takes its name from the wooden cranes that once lined the Rhine riverbank. These heavy timber machines hoisted barrels of wine and crates of cargo from ships directly into the storehouses along this street. Merchants built these narrow, deep buildings to keep their goods close to the water while protecting them from the frequent flooding of the river. One stone house still bears the carved marks showing where the floodwaters rose during the major overflows of the seventeenth century.
